Context
In Acts 8, the gospel is moving beyond Jerusalem, and Philip's ministry among the Samaritans and the Ethiopian shows the widening reach of Christ's kingdom. The chapter's baptism scenes belong to that outward expansion of the gospel and the immediate obedience of those who receive it.
Common Interpretations
Down into the water. Up out of the water. This is the consistent physical picture of baptism in the NT narrative. Much water was needed — consistent with immersion as the norm. Sprinkling requires no such provision.
