Romans 5:8 should be read within the flow of its chapter and the larger argument of Romans.
Common Interpretations
When Jesus says love your enemies, He is not adding a requirement to the gospel. He is showing you what the King is like — the One who loved His enemies enough to die for them while they were still His enemies (Romans 5:8). When He says forgive seventy times seven, He is not giving a new rule. He is revealing the heart of the One who has forgiven an infinite debt that you and I could never repay. When He says blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are the meek, blessed are the merciful — He is describing the people who have understood the gospel well enough that it has begun to reshape them from the inside out.
