Context
Psalm 22 moves from abandonment and suffering into vindication and praise before the nations. When its opening cry appears on Jesus' lips, the whole psalm stands behind the citation, not merely its first line in isolation.
Common Interpretations
This is the rawest prayer in the Bible. Jesus is not asking God to stop what is happening. He is not requesting relief. He is bringing the full, unfiltered weight of what He is experiencing into words, directed at the Father, in the darkest moment any human being has ever faced. The Father does not answer immediately. He does not remove the suffering. The cup is drunk to the last drop. If Jesus could bring this kind of honesty before God without it being unfaithful, so can we.
