Proverbs 3:1-12

Trust in the LORD with All Your Heart

1 My son, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments;
2 for they will add length to your days,
years and peace to your life.
3 Never let loving devotion or faithfulness leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will find favor and high regard
in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways acknowledge Him,
and He will make your paths straight.
7 Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and turn away from evil.
8 This will bring healing to your body
and refreshment to your bones.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth
and with the firstfruits of all your harvest;
10 then your barns will be filled with plenty,
and your vats will overflow with new wine.
11 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,
and do not loathe His rebuke;
12 for the LORD disciplines the one He loves,
as does a father the son in whom he delights.

Context

In Proverbs 3, wisdom is presented as a way of life marked by trust, humility, correction, and submission to the Lord's ordering of the path. Its language about trusting and acknowledging God belongs to a whole chapter about wise dependence rather than self-direction.

Common Interpretations

Proverbs 3:5-6 speaks to the limits of human judgment. The passage calls for trust in the LORD precisely because we do not see enough of the path to direct it wisely on our own. That matters for prayer as well. The warning against leaning on our own understanding cuts against the assumption that we are equipped to decide in advance which specific outcome would best serve God's purpose.

Current Position

This site's current position is that Proverbs 3:5-6 calls for more than emotional confidence that God will back the path we prefer. It calls for surrender of self-direction itself. In the context of prayer, that means trust is not insisting on a chosen outcome and then asking God to authorize it. Trust is acknowledging Him precisely where our own understanding proves insufficient.
