Context
Matthew 4:10 should be read within the flow of its chapter and the larger argument of Matthew.
Common Interpretations
The second obligation: bow in allegiance (proskuneō) and serve (latreuō) God alone. With Jesus, everything changes. The first obligation — the geographic gathering at a sacred location — is explicitly abolished (John 4:21: "neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem"). The appointed place is no more. The second obligation — the orientation of the whole life toward God in allegiance and service — is not abolished but deepened and expanded beyond anything the old covenant contained. The believer now bears in their own body the presence that once required a journey to Jerusalem.
