Context
In Mark 16, the resurrection stands at the center, and the longer ending has long been discussed because of its textual history. Any use of this chapter should distinguish clearly between the resurrection message itself and questions surrounding the longer textual ending.
Common Interpretations
A textual note: Mark 16:9-20 is absent from the oldest and most reliable manuscripts, and most scholarly translations flag this section accordingly. That's worth knowing, but it doesn't need to settle the matter on its own. Even taking this verse at full face value, the structure itself is informative. The first half pairs belief and baptism: believed and has been baptized, shall be saved. But the condemnation clause that follows drops baptism entirely: he who has disbelieved shall be condemned — not "has not been baptized." If both were equally the dividing line between saved and condemned, the second half would need to name both. It names one.
