Context
In John 15, Jesus uses the vine and branches to teach abiding, fruitfulness, obedience, love, and dependence on Him. Requests in this chapter are framed by ongoing union with Christ, not by detached human wishing.
Common Interpretations
To abide in Christ means to follow His example, to live as He would have you live, to do as He would have you do. In other words, to abide in Him is to live according to His will. That is exactly the condition 1 John 5:14-15 already gave us — ask according to His will, and He hears you. John 15:7 is saying the same thing in different words: abide in Him, and your asking will already be shaped by His will, because that is what abiding means. In short, abiding in Christ is not a posture you adopt so you can still ask for the job, the money, the car, or anything else you already wanted — just with "if it's Your will" attached at the end. That is not abiding; that is the same self-directed asking wearing religious language. Genuine abiding does not produce a list of personal requests with a disclaimer. It produces a person who is no longer asking for those things in the first place, because their wants have actually been replaced by His.
