James 1:5 should be read within the flow of its chapter and the larger argument of James.
Common Interpretations
Prayer and wisdom. James 1:5 — "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him." The gift promised in response to asking is wisdom — the sanctified judgment to navigate circumstances — not a sign pointing to a predetermined answer. The counsel of others. Proverbs 15:22 — "Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed." The community of believers, grounded in the same Word, is itself a means of guidance. Providential circumstances, interpreted through Scripture. God orders events — that is basic Christian doctrine. But the interpretive key for those events is always the Word, not our impressions about their meaning. The difference between providence and personal revelation is the difference between God ordering what happens and God encoding a personal message in it for us to decode. Scripture supports the first. It does not teach the second.
