Context
In Acts 22, Paul is giving his defense in Jerusalem by recounting his conversion and commission. The chapter is autobiographical and covenantal at once, showing how the risen Christ interrupted Paul's former life and redirected him into obedience and witness.

The Greek word here is ἀπολούω (apolouō (ah-poh-LOO-oh)) — to wash off or wash away thoroughly. This is distinct from ἄφεσις (aphesis (AH-feh-sis)) — the releasing or forgiveness of the debt of sin that occurs at faith. Forgiveness cancels the debt. Baptism washes the person. These are two distinct transactions. Notice also the participle "calling on His name" — the washing is connected to genuine faith, not to the water acting independently.
