Restored reading: "...who held God in awe..." Lydia had not yet heard the gospel, yet her heart was already bowed in awe. She didn't perform rituals to gain God's favor — she lived in reverent fear. And because she already held God in awe, God opened her heart further. This is sebomai: a quiet, inner reverence that prepares the soul to receive truth.
