Common Interpretations
The word translated "God-fearing" is a form of sebomai — sebomenōn. These were Gentiles marked not by ritual or status but by their inner reverence. Their hearts were already bowed, and so when they heard Paul's message, they were drawn further in. God draws near to those who already stand in awe of Him. These were Gentiles already living in reverent awe of Israel's God. Sebomai had already turned their hearts in the right direction — and that reverence became fertile ground for truth.
